Sam Lipman, Guitar
Born, raised and educated in the world’s most beautiful city of Sydney, Australia, Sam Lipman’s work reflects this beauty in all aspects. As a jazz saxophonist in New York City, he has imbued a bubbly world accent, as a sizzling rock guitarist/vocalist in Austin, he has imbibed a local dialect.
His experiences of creating, composing for and conducting Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Chamber Orchestra has given him a sense of the colossal. His work with electronic music has won him a loyal following all over the world, as has his stark moody songwriting style. His recording experience has won him hard-earned professional wisdom, including TV scoring for Super Bowl spots, and record dates for Justin Timberlake.
In 1991, Sam Lipman walked out of high school with a burning passion to play music. Going against his parents’ and career adviser’s wishes, Sam left home, family and Australia’s most prestigious university program at Sydney Conservatorium to pursue a music career in New York City.
Keeping up with the changing world of film and advertising, Sam learnt to play and score for many instruments. His studies with Juilliard head composer Robert Beaser helped hone his talent into a contemporary voice, while studies with Columbia University’s symphonic director George Rothman gave him a firm grasp on orchestral conducting, and his full-time jazz saxophone career gave Sam a solid grounding in the NY scene.
Ever-widening his skill-set, Sam relocated in 2003 to Austin, TX, to explore the world of songwriting, vocalising and rocking out. Here he founded his rock band The Handsome Charlies and by 2005 was signed to indie label I Eat Records. The Charlies’ first single Makes Me Love Youwas ranked at #1 on San Antonio college radio for 7 consecutive weeks, and its video made heavy rotation on MTV. The band was then nominated for Austin Chronicle’s best new band in 2006.
Since then, Sam has toured the United States with internationally acclaimed Shearwater, Australia with jazz heavyweight Kurt Rosenwinkel, played Kauai’s All Saints Jazz Festival twice with Chris Maresh Quartet, composed, performed, conducted and recorded several works for national TV commercials, including Southwest Airlines, match.com, Kohl’s, and several Wal-Mart spots that played heavily during Super Bowl XL, featuring members of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lipman.
