Music Therapy Services with Rachel Smith, MA, MT-BC

Rachel See Smith, MA, MT-BC, is a board-certified music therapist working as an independent music therapy contractor in the Austin area.  Smith graduated summa cum laude from the University of Iowa, where she obtained her Equivalency and Master’s degrees in Music Therapy.  She received her B.A. in Communication Disorders (speech pathology) from Truman State University in 2006.   Smith has 22 years of Suzuki violin experience and has played the piano for 23 years.  She is also competent in voice and guitar.

She has played in the first violin section of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra (nine years) and the Truman State University chamber and large-ensemble orchestras.  Smith’s awards include music therapy teaching and research assistantships at the University of Iowa, as well as music and service scholarships at Truman State University.

Smith has had extensive knowledge and experience using music therapy with children and adults with various conditions and diagnoses, including: cerebral palsy, down’s syndrome, autism, sensory processing disorders, expressive/receptive language difficulties, and mental health disorders.

She specializes in using music therapy to address the needs and goals of children on the autism spectrum and those with communication disorders. With an undergraduate in speech pathology, her music therapy experience has included working with children in a speech therapy preschool program, leading music therapy sessions for children with hearing aids and cochlear implants, and being a research assistant with the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics Music Perception Team in the department of Otolaryngology, testing music perception abilities and preferences of children and adults with cochlear implants.
