What is music therapy?
Music therapy is an evidence-based, allied health profession that uses music interventions to accomplish individualized, non-musical goals with a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.
Music Therapy offers a variety of approaches to fit your needs and schedule:
Adaptive Music Lessons: These individual lessons are designed and implemented by the therapist specifically for individuals with disabilities and special accommodations, including (but not limited to) children with: autism, cerebral palsy, and down’s syndrome.
Group Music Therapy Sessions: Group MT sessions cater to multiple clients with similar needs and goals. Goals addressed include: expressive/receptive speech and language, behavioral/social, physical (gross and fine motor skills), and academic/cognitive goals. These sessions include singing, instrument play, song writing, and movement to music.
Individual Music Therapy Sessions: Individual MT sessions target the client’s cognitive, emotional, sensorimotor, communication, and/or psychosocial therapeutic needs based on initial assessment.
All lessons and sessions are held at The Velocity Music Academy. Please contact Rachel at 319-461-3655 or exploremusictherapy@gmail.com to make an appointment or if you have any questions about music therapy

Rachel’s philosophy of music therapy:
Music therapy can be used to treat a variety of needs for people of all ages—from young children on the autism spectrum to those in a end-of-life care hospice setting. Because of the nature of music, it is a multi-faceted field, treating and touching different parts of the human soul—mentally, behaviorally, academically and socially, in accordance with the different goals and objectives implemented by the music therapist and carried out through the music, whether it is music-as-therapy or music-in-therapy. Most importantly, a music therapist must treat all clients with kindness and respect in an ethical, culturally sensitive manner in order to form a strong, appropriate, therapeutic relationship.
